Announcing the Winners of Bee 2011!
Claremont Globetrotters
Representing
Community Friends of International Students

at the Claremont Colleges

The 6th Annual Adult Community Spelling Bee on April 3rd was a-buzzing with excitement!  The event included the El Roble cheerleaders, music, entertaining masters of ceremonies, a snack bar, children’s activities, basket raffle and many enthusiastic supporters of all the teams. The Claremont Globetrotters (representing the Community Friends of International Students) were triumphant with the winning word “scrobiculate.”   Awards were also given to the teams with the Best Fan club (Mt. San Antonio Gardens), and the Best Costume (Claremont Older Women’s Soccer).

The biggest winner was our library as we raised over $5300 in much needed funding.  The money will be used to support the Children's Summer Reading Program, purchase books, DVDs, and special collections, and coordinate our citywide reading program.  Thank you to all of our Friends, volunteers, and supporters who participated and cheered on the participants!

The annual fundraiser for the Friends group is the Adult Community Spelling Bee.  This event, patterned after the Scripps Howard National Contest, included 21 teams each made up of three adult members.

Past teams have been local organizations such as the Claremont Rotary, League of Women Voters, and House of Ruth.  We have also had groups with no formal affiliation other than that they love the library and want to have a good time supporting it.   The winners earn a spot in the Claremont 4th of July parade and a years worth of bragging rights.

The Sunday afternoon event includes cheerleaders, music, entertaining masters of ceremonies, a snack bar, activities for children, a basket raffle and many enthusiastic fans and supporters of all the teams.
